Irish Soccer Squad visit Headfort Golf Club

The Ireland soccer squad, along with coaches and backroom staff, were guests of Headfort Golf Club, Kells today (Wednesday) when they played a round of golf on the magnificent Headfort New course.

Irish manager Martin O’Neill, a keen golfer who has played Headfort quite a few times was invited to take his squad to the Meath venue on a ‘rest day’ and he accepted the invitation.

On  a scorcher of a day the team bus pulled into the Headfort around 10.30 and posed for photographs before partaking in tea/coffee while O’Neill and Headfort Vice-Captain Peter Burns outlined the order of play for the day.

Headfort Captain Norman Ormiston and President Larry Walsh started proceedings on the first tee along with O’Neill and Headfort’s Brian McMahon.

Shane Long, Aidan McGeady , John O’Shea along with the rest of the current panel found the New course a huge challenge but were absolutely enthralled with the scenery and playing conditions.

Assistant manager Roy Keane drew a lot of attention from fans and played at the rear of the field. Although not a regular golfer the Corkman played the full eighteen holes and enjoyed the Headfort experience.

President Larry Walsh thanked the party for coming to Headfort and wished them well in their forthcoming friendlies against Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal. Following a meal and presentation the players posed for photographs and signed autographs before boarding the bus back to base at Malahide.

A four-person team event was won by Stephen Ward (Wolves), Alan Byrne (medical), Kevin Mulligan (physio) and Headfort’s Francis Duffy. Martin McCormack (H’fort) won the singles competition.

Griffin Wins Headfort Senior Scratch Cup.

Waterford’s Eanna Griffin had five shots to spare on Sunday evening as he claimed the Headfort Golf Club Senior Scratch Cup, sponsored by  SuperValu (Kells) with a four-round total of 288.

The 21-year-old, who was runner up last month to Headfort’s Rory McNamara in the Lee Valley Scratch Cup was absolutely thrilled with his win.

“I really wanted this win and now that it’s come its great. I had a wayward front nine on todays second 18 (on Headfort Old) but birdied 13th, 16th and 17th which was the making of the win.”

The strong field tackled Headfort New on Saturday morning and Headfort Old in the afternoon in pretty good conditions compared to the constant drizzle on Sunday.

Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) was second on 293 – his best round on Headfort New on Sunday with a 1 under par 71. Third was Sean O’Connor (Luttrelstown) on 297 and Headfort’s best was Greg Mungovan on 301 in fourth spot. Laytown/Bettystown Cian Geraghty finished fifth, also on 301.

These young golfers found the courses at Headfort a huge challenge. “The two courses were in top class condition out there. I’ve played here a few times and its always special to play here,” said Griffin.

Results from West of Ireland Championship.

Headfort duo Rory McNamara and Greg Mungovan both qualified for the matchplay section of the West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at Co. Sligo (Rosses Point) Golf Club over the Easter weekend, but both unfortunately were defeated in Round 1 (last 64).

The cut was set at 148 and Headfort’s Ronan O’Reilly missed the matchplay by the narrowest of margins when he recorded a 149 total (76, 73).

Whelan was beaten in the last 32 while Hopkins exited the competition at the last 16 hurdle.

Launch of Senior Scratch Cup

Headfort Golf Club has launched their Senior Scratch Cup tournament, which will take place at the Kells venue on Saturday and Sunday, 17th and 18th May next. Generously sponsored by SuperValu, Kells (Larry O’Brien) the tournament  - which was a huge success in 2013 – has grown into a 72-hole competition boasting World Amateur Ranking points, as approved by the R & A. Up to 90 top class golfers from all over Ireland will converge on the fairways of Headfort New (ranked 6th best parkland course in Irelandin Backspin magazine) on the Saturday morning and continue in the afternoon when they take on the challenge of Headfort Old in an attempt to make the top 50 and equals for a Sunday tee-time. The qualifiers will tee-up again on Sunday morning on the new course and the drama will conclude on Headfort Old on Sunday afternoon. Spectators are more than welcome to come along and watch the cream of young talent compete for the honour of Headfort Senior Scratch Cup winner. Competition Secretary Fred Reilly outlined that having the R & A approve world ranking points gives the tournament a higher profile and will attract the highest grade players which will include most of the current Irish Senior Panel. Headfort player and Irish international Rory McNamara is expected to lead the local challenge. Last year’s winner – Simon Ward – has moved on into the professional ranks so a new name will appear on the trophy on Sunday evening. European Tour professional Damien McGrane is also excited about the forthcoming event at his home club. “It’s great to see Headfort get together to pool its resources with two wonderful courses here for the category one player. It’s a good test of golf and will certainly test all aspects of their game where they will use every club in the bag. So Headfort, with the backing of SuperValu (Kells) will put on a good test of golf with the golf courses in great condition.” Headfort Golf Club encourages all golf enthusiasts to visit the club on the weekend of 17th/18th to enjoy the spectacle and support the players.
