Hosting of One Armed Golfers Championships

Headfort Golf Club is proud to welcome some international visitors from June 14th to 19th.

The Society of One Armed Golfers (SOAG) was founded in Scotland in 1932. Its objective is to provide a level playing field in golf for all those unfortunate enough to have lost the use of an arm. Every year a World Championship is held which attracts an average of 50 entries from some 12 different countries and Headfort Golf Club is the host of SOAG's 2015 World Championship. "We last had a World Championship in Headfort in 2001 - which was enormously successful," says a spokesperson for SOAG.

The golfers - a disproportionate number of whom have lost an arm in motorcycle accidents - have won praise from many quarters, including Spanish pro player, Sergio Garcia, who says: “I have great admiration for these golfers who chase their dream and focus on their abilities instead of disabilities.”

The present membership numbers around 180 drawn from all parts of the world. Although largely based in the British Isles, other members hail from the USA, Germany, Sweden, India, Australia, Bermuda, France, South Africa, Denmark, Indonesia and the Netherlands.

"We are looking forward to hosting this World Championship on our award-winning facilities and we plan to extend the famous Headfort welcome to our international visitors," says Captain Peter Burns.

Expect a fine week of golf as many of the SOAG members play off a very low handicap and are highly competitive when it comes to winning tournaments. The five days of golf will culminate in a prize-giving ceremony and dinner in Headfort's Clubhouse on the evening of Friday June 19th.

Golfers Guide to Ireland Awards 2015

Headfort are delighted to have been awarded the 'Best Parkland Course in Leinster 2015' by Golfers Guide to Ireland. Congratulations also to our 'Twin Club' Portsalon who were awarded 'Best Hidden Gem in Ulster'

Headfort representatives, Captain Norman Ormiston, Lady Captain Jo Noonan, Vice Captain Peter Burns and President Larry Walsh accepted the award from Mary Mitchell O'Connor TD, Eamonn Darcy, Greg Allen(RTE) and Pat Donnellan.

Report from Golfers Guide Below:

Golf Club Awards

Dun Laoghaire, and, Royal Co. Down, were last night (Mon. Jan 19th) nominated winners of the Golfers Guide to Ireland ‘best parkland and links 2015’ Golf Club Awards. Dublin based publishers of the Golfers Guide to Ireland, yesterday announced the results of its annual golf business awards at a function held in Druids Glen Golf Club, Wicklow. The function was attended by over 100 golf club and golf sector interests. Government representative, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD presented the awards which recognise leadership roles played by Irish Golf Clubs and associated golf interests on the island of Ireland. These included awards for overall island of Ireland and provincial parklands and links clubs, golf club secretaries and managers, along with golf resorts and hotels specialising in golf travel and tourism. Winners received a specially commissioned certificate in recognition of their achievement. All awards were won on the basis of an all-Ireland poll undertaken from within the golf and golf related business community.

Mary Mitchell O’Connor said there is clear evidence of real signs of repair and improvement in the economy. Those involved in the golf sector could look forward to rebuilding its significant loss in club membership numbers, increasing operations’ revenue and overcoming difficulties presented during the past number of years. ‘Plans published by the recently formed Confederation of Golf in Ireland’ she said ‘underwrite the sector’s commitment to pull together, to recognise what needs to be done, and the willingness by all interests to be pro-active in achieving its goals’. Ms Mitchell O’Connor said it was appropriate that Dun Laoghaire will host the Curtis Cup in 2016. It will add an extra dimension to highlighting the growth of lady membership numbers, one of the aims identified by the Confederation.  Competition between all sport disciplines in the recruitment of young players while healthy in many respects has had an impact on introducing and holding young golf club members. Golf must address this aspect of its development and Ms. Mitchell O’Connor said she was happy to see that this again was being treated as a priority by the Confederation. Referring to the golf tourism Ms. Mitchell O’Connor welcomed the January 2014 report issued by Fáilte Ireland which revealed that 163,000 visitors played golf while here and accounted for eu200m in revenue in 2012. The report also emphasised the high levels of satisfaction experienced by our visitors which formed the foundation for continued success into the future, she said.

Paddy McCarthy, Director, Golfer’s Guide to Ireland magazine said he was completely confident the successes achieved by our current crop of Irish professional superstars will continue to grab headlines the Ireland golf brand on the international stage.  ‘Royal County Down will be centre of world attention for the Irish Open in May, particularly with both Rory McIlroy and America’s Ricky Fowler in the field. Add to this the prospect of a star studded golf team in the forthcoming Olympics, under Team Leader and Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley raises hopes of even better days to come. In amateur golf the World Amateur Team Championships 2018 will be hosted by Carton House. With so many positives coming on stream at all levels it was a privilege to recognise individual achievement by those involved in the grass roots of our industry’. she said.
