Ireland to Battle with England on Day 1 of SHIM

The Senior Home International Matches began yesterday at Alyth Golf Club, Scotland and will run until Thursday 29th of September. Ireland entered the Matches as Senior European Team Champions and also have recent Irish Senior Open Stroke Play Champion Gertie McMullen (The Island) and 2016 British Senior Amateur Open Champion Laura Webb (East Berkshire) within their ranks.
Day 1 began as a tight affair with all three of the morning foursomes matches heading down the 18th hole. Unfortunately however, it was England who won the opening session claiming the 18th in two of the matches, leaving them with 2 ½ points from 3 heading into the afternoon singles.
Ireland’s luck didn’t increase after lunch. Both Carol Wickham (Laytown & Bettystown) and Laura Webb (East Berkshire) got off to a good start. Three and 4up through 7 holes respectively, they closed out their matches 2&1 and 5&4 adding to the half point secured in the morning foursomes. It was not to be for the Irish in the other 3 matches however as Mary Sheehy, Maria O’Reilly and Gertie McMullen fell short securing a 5 ½ to 2 ½ win for England.
Ireland will now face Wales on Day 2 with the foursomes pairings lining up as follows;
Carol Wickham & Sheena McElroy vs. Ann Lewis & Sharon Roberts

Mary Sheehy & Maria O’Reilly vs. Chris Harries & Olwen Davies
